The Problem With Traditional Patio Covers

Most patio covers start with a good idea: shade, rain protection, and more usable outdoor space. But many traditional designs, while they do work, can have drawbacks or create long term problems. Free standing covers next to the home can often feel awkward and waste valuable space for post placement. Tied-in or framed covers can be expensive and bulking overframing can make many patios end up feeling darker, heavier, and more enclosed than homeowners originally imagined. Low sloped gutter or eve attached covers drain water poorly, debris can build up, leaks often develop over time, and wood framing can eventually begin to rot. Roof attached methods will void the roof warranty, can increase the chances of roofleaks in the home, and have to be removed when the house needs to be reroofed.

The Issue Starts at the Roofline

SkyLift was built around one jobsite truth: the house-side connection is the bottleneck. If it connects to the house, you can get rid of save space; but If that connection point is too low (or forced to fight the gutter), you end up compromising pitch, drainage, headroom, airflow, natural light, and the finished look. If you do a full tied-in cover with overframing it gets vastly more expensive and you still end up fighting for airflow, natural light, and the general “cave-like” feeling.

SkyLift raises that connection so the cover can sit higher above the roof-line, improving pitch and creating a cleaner, more integrated install. To do this in a way that protects the home's roofing warranty and the structural integrity; our risers, instead of attaching to the roof, they go through the roof and attach to the top of the exterior double top plate wall. This allows the risers to carry the patio cover load straight down to the foundation. Additionally the SkyLift roof riser is sealed at the roofline using a code approved pipevent flashing/roof boot for your roof type. Using this method allows the roofing warranty to stay intact as it is using flashing methods that the roofing material was designed to work with.
